Lake County Agencies Need Baby Boomers To Volunteer

May 10, 2015

Earlier this week in The Times, a news items reported that Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana is seeking volunteers to deliver meals to residents in Lake County. Additionally, nonprofit Habitat for Humanity of NWI and Rebuilding Together, regularly seek volunteers to assist in building homes and also re-building the lives of those in need (i.e. veterans, senior citizens, peopole with disabilities). Our schools need mentors for struggling students, and Nazareth Home in East Chicago is always looking for “cuddlers” to rock their babies. Get the message, baby boomers (and you of all ages)? Volunteers have a major impact on the well-being of our communities, and YOU can make a difference. Think of the ways that volunteers make a difference in Lake County:

Volunteers tutor, mentor and support our youth in everything from math to soccer

Volunteers deliver important services – i.e. fighting fires, answering the phone at domestic violence centers, delivering meals to the homebound

Volunteers educate the public – i.e. lawyers donate time to legal aid clinics, and doctors donate time and knowledge to free clinics.

Volunteers re-build houses, clean parks

Get the idea? You can make a difference, regardless of your age. You can even volunteer as a family and show your children firsthand how volunteering your time and energy can make a difference in your community.

In addition, volunteering is good for the soul. It also connects you to others who might share similar interests, and for our younger aspiring leaders, it might even advance your career if your boss is watching.

So if you have the urge to get off the couch and contribute more to society, call one or more of these great agencies in Lake County – both you and your new adopted agency will be the winners:
Meals on Wheels – (219) 756-3663

Habitat for Humanity – (219) 923-7265

Rebuilding Together – (219) 213-0688
